Hiroshima University, National university in Higashihiroshima, Japan
Hiroshima University is a national higher education institution in eastern Hiroshima Prefecture with buildings spread across several square kilometers. Faculties cluster around central plazas, linked by wide pathways and green spaces.
Eight separate educational institutions merged to form this university in 1949 when Japan fundamentally reformed its higher education system. The relocation from central Hiroshima to Higashihiroshima began in 1982 and lasted over a decade, with medical facilities remaining at the original site.
Students from more than one hundred countries attend seminars and use libraries alongside their Japanese peers. The campus feels like a small town with its own shops, sports facilities and dormitories where international daily life unfolds.
Visitors reach the campus by trains or buses running multiple times daily from central Hiroshima. Those wishing to explore the grounds should wear comfortable shoes, as distances between buildings are considerable.
Some laboratories and research facilities occasionally open their doors to schoolchildren and the public to show scientific work up close. The medical faculty remained in Hiroshima city and works closely with hospitals there, while all other departments moved to Higashihiroshima.
