Urawa Station, Railway interchange station in Urawa-ku, Saitama, Japan.
Urawa Station is a railway interchange in Urawa-ku north of Tokyo connecting several regional and long-distance lines. The elevated structure spans the entire track layout and provides space for a large station building with shops and passages.
The facility opened in 1883 and originally belonged to the private Nippon Tetsudō company. The major reconstruction project began in 2005 and changed the entire elevation of the tracks over nearly a decade.
The name comes from feudal Japan and now marks a key center in Saitama Prefecture. Pedestrians cross a wide passage under the tracks that leads directly to the city's major department stores.
The platforms are elevated above street level and accessible by stairs and elevators. Automatic doors along some platform edges provide additional safety during rush hours.
The track elevation progressed through multiple construction phases without closing down ongoing train operations. Engineers shifted each track section step by step and continued passenger service upward while the old routes were removed meter by meter.
