Shimoda, Port settlement in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan

Located at the southern tip of Izu Peninsula, Shimoda extends over 104 square kilometers with mountains to the north and the Kuroshio Current flowing along its southern coast.

The arrival of Commodore Perry's ships in 1854 at Shimoda port marked a turning point, leading to the establishment of the first American consulate in Japan.

The Kurofune Matsuri festival in May commemorates the historical connection between Japan and the United States through traditional performances and naval demonstrations.

Travelers from Tokyo can reach Shimoda by taking the Odoriko limited express train, which takes approximately two and a half hours and costs 6180 yen.
