Ishinomaki is a port city on the Pacific coast in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, with several fishing harbors, industrial zones, and residential neighborhoods. The city extends along the waterfront and reaches inland, where housing areas sit between hills and river channels.
In March 2011, a tsunami following the Tōhoku earthquake struck the city severely, claiming over three thousand lives. The city was fundamentally reshaped in the following years through reconstruction projects.
The Ishinomori Manga Museum displays the works of Shotaro Ishinomori, creator of Cyborg 009 and Kamen Rider, in a building shaped like an open comic book. Inside, visitors can see original drawings and characters from his best-known series.
Visitors can reach the city from Sendai in about an hour using the JR Senseki-Tohoku Line, which runs regularly. The waterfront areas are best explored on foot or by bicycle, while the center is compact and easy to walk around.
The Miyagi 3.11 Tsunami Memorial Museum preserves artifacts and records from the 2011 catastrophe, including personal belongings and photographs. The museum serves as an educational center that documents the experiences of survivors and gives visitors insight into what happened.
