Kashima Soccer Stadium, Soccer stadium in Jinkōji, Kashima, Japan.
Kashima Soccer Stadium is an association football venue in Jinkōji within the city limits of Kashima in Ibaraki Prefecture. The main stand rises across six floors and the entire site covers an area of more than ten hectares.
Construction started in March 1992 following the introduction of professional soccer in Japan and the architectural firm Nikken Sekkei drew up the plans. A few years later the venue became the setting for international matches during the 2002 football tournament.
The venue takes its name from one of the most successful clubs in the J1 League and regularly draws thousands of fans who gather in the stands. On match days the grounds fill with supporters who cheer loudly for their team and wear the colors of their club.
The venue holds more than forty thousand spectators and features a dedicated train station on the JR East Kashima Line right at the grounds. Arriving by rail offers convenient access without long walks.
During the 2002 tournament a memorable match between Argentina and Nigeria took place here that football fans around the world followed. The atmosphere on that day showed the importance of the place for international sport.
