Yasaka Shrine

The main hall of Yasaka Shrine combines the inner sanctuary and offering hall, featuring a dance stage decorated with numerous lanterns lit during evenings.

The shrine dates back to 656 during the Asuka period when an envoy from Korea brought the spirit of Susanoo-no-mikoto to this location.

The shrine hosts the annual Gion Matsuri in July, which includes a grand procession of massive floats through the streets of Kyoto.

Located between Gion-Shijo Station and Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station, the shrine remains open throughout the year with no admission fee required.

Each lantern displayed on the dance stage carries the name of a local business that made a contribution to support the shrine's maintenance.
