Hitachinaka, Coastal city in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan
Hitachinaka is a city on the Pacific coast in Ibaraki Prefecture, roughly 110 kilometers northeast of Tokyo. Sandy beaches alternate with green spaces, while residential neighborhoods stretch between the shore and inland hills.
Two separate towns, Nakaminato and Katsuta, merged in 1994 to form the new municipality. The fusion aimed to consolidate administration and infrastructure along this stretch of coast.
Coastal fishing shapes the townscape with small harbors where fishermen land fresh catches each morning. Local restaurants serve sashimi and grilled fish brought straight from the Pacific.
Trains from Katsuta Station run on the Joban Line directly to Tokyo, connecting the town with the capital region. Buses circulate between neighborhoods and reach beaches and park areas along the coast.
In spring the Hitachi Seaside Park turns into a blue sea of flowers when millions of nemophila blooms open at once. Visitors walk over gentle hills completely covered by this blue blanket.
