Fukuoka-Kitakyushu is a major metropolitan region covering northern Kyushu with connections to parts of Honshu. Multiple cities within this area are linked by rail networks, bus systems, and an international airport that serves as a regional hub.
The region took its modern form in 1963 when several municipalities merged to create Kitakyushu city. This consolidation fundamentally changed how the metropolitan area was organized and named.
The metropolitan area features numerous educational institutions, including Kyushu Institute of Technology and Kyushu International University, contributing to regional academic development.
Getting around is easiest by using the rail and bus lines that connect the various cities throughout the region. Kitakyushu Airport provides a convenient entry point for arriving visitors.
The region generates an annual GDP of 19,047 billion yen, making it the largest economic zone west of the Keihanshin region in Japan.
