ACROS Fukuoka, Cultural complex in Tenjin, Japan
ACROS Fukuoka is a multistorey cultural and conference building with an integrated music hall in the Tenjin district of Fukuoka city. A terraced garden spreads across the entire facade, giving the structure a stepped green exterior that sets it apart from the surrounding architecture.
Designed by Nihon Sekkei and built by Takenaka Corporation, the building opened in April 1995. That same year it received the BCS Prize, a major Japanese award for architecture.
The name combines Asian Crossroads Over the Sea, reflecting the city's position as a gateway to Asia through its coastal location. The concert halls and meeting rooms inside are used for musical performances and public events where locals and visitors regularly gather.
The building is a five minute walk from Tenjin Station on the Airport Line. A car park with 116 spaces is available and the facility opens at 7 in the morning and closes at half past ten in the evening.
The complex reaches a height of 197 feet (60 meters) above ground and has four underground levels below. The planted terraces have grown continuously since opening and change the appearance of the building with each season.
