Hakata-za, Theater building in Hakata-ku, Japan
Hakata-za is a theater in Shimo-kawabatamachi, Hakata-ku, Japan. The hall holds approximately 1450 seats and was designed with contemporary architecture to accommodate different performance formats.
The building opened in late May 1999 and added to the cultural offerings of Fukuoka city. The founding marked a new focus for performing arts in the region.
The building takes its name from the historic Hakata district and offers traditional Japanese stage arts that visitors can experience in the large performance space. Productions range from classical to modern works that change throughout the year.
The stage sits inside the Hakata Riverain complex and allows online ticket reservations in advance. An onsite bakery sells fresh baked goods for visitors during their stay.
The venue organizes a Citizen's Stage Month when local residents can present their own productions on the main stage. This series opens the large stage to the local community.
