Ryūgū-ji

Ryūgū-ji is a Buddhist temple in Fukuoka with a main hall and several buildings spread across spacious grounds. The complex includes exhibition spaces where religious objects are displayed, along with traditional structures that contain rotating shelves holding sacred texts.

The temple was established at a new location when a regional leader decided to move the complex from its original seaside place. It became an important religious center in the Fukuoka area over time.

The temple displays statues and carved figures that show how Buddhist artists worked with wood and stone over centuries. Walking through the grounds, you can see the detail in the sculptures and understand how this craft was valued in the region.

The grounds are easy to walk through with clear paths connecting the different buildings and areas. Take your time to move slowly between the structures so you can see all the details and take in the space.

The site houses an enormous seated wooden Buddha statue surrounded by a decorative ring featuring many carved Buddha figures. This unusual arrangement shows how artists integrated a major sculpture into a larger artistic design.
