Hakata Riverain, Commercial complex in Hakata-ku, Japan
Hakata Riverain is a large shopping and cultural center with about 70 shops, restaurants, an art museum, and offices spread along the Naka River. The buildings combine retail, dining, and culture in one location, with dedicated areas for theater and exhibitions.
The complex opened in 1999 and transformed the historic Kawabata district, which had long been a traditional trading area, into a modern retail destination. This change shows how the city renewed old business zones.
The Fukuoka Asian Art Museum inside presents contemporary artworks from across Asia, allowing visitors to engage with current artistic movements. Regular international exhibitions give people the chance to explore different artistic traditions and perspectives.
The complex connects directly to Nakasukawabata Station and offers parking for vehicles. Visitors can shop and explore different areas during daytime hours from 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM.
The Hakata-Za Theater has a revolving stage and a traditional wooden walkway for Kabuki performances right beside the river. This stage equipment is still used today for actual Kabuki shows.
