Hatsukaichi

Hatsukaichi is a coastal city in Hiroshima Prefecture that extends from the sea to mountains inland. Streets lead from the bay up to forested slopes and distant ski areas.

The settlement began as a market town named after gatherings held on the twentieth day of the month. In the 13th century, the community grew through reconstruction work on a nearby shrine on Miyajima island.

The mint facility in a western district opens its gates during cherry blossom season and offers access to a garden with rare tree varieties. Visitors walk between branches in different shades of pink and see flower shapes that differ from those in other parks.

Trains stop at several stations along the coast and connect the city to larger towns in the region. Ferries leave regularly for nearby islands.

A mountain resort southeast of the city offers the nearest ski slopes to Hiroshima and features a hot spring where swimsuits are worn. The facility draws day-trippers in winter who want to reach snow within a few hours.
