Higashi-Nemuro Station, railway station in Nemuro, Hokkaido, Japan
Higashi-Nemuro Station is a former railway station in the city of Nemuro, on the eastern tip of Hokkaido, the northernmost main island of Japan. The building is a small wooden structure set in a flat, open landscape, with a single platform that once served the Hanasaki Line.
The station opened in the early 20th century as the Hanasaki Line was extended to connect remote fishing communities along the eastern coast of Hokkaido. Passenger numbers fell steadily over the following decades, and the line was eventually closed, leaving the station without service.
For railway enthusiasts across Japan, this station long held a special place as the easternmost point on the national rail network. Visitors would travel far just to stand on the platform and mark that geographic endpoint on their journey.
The station sits in a flat area that is easy to walk around, but there are very few facilities in the immediate surroundings, so it is worth planning ahead. Visiting on a clear day makes the most of the open landscape that surrounds the site on all sides.
Until the line closed, Higashi-Nemuro held the title of the easternmost railway station in all of Japan, a fact that drew travelers who collected such geographic endpoints. The platform itself is still visible today, offering a sense of where that long rail journey once came to an end.
