Nankoku, Administrative center in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan

Nankoku is a city in Kōchi Prefecture located between the Shikoku Mountains and the Pacific Coast. The Mononobe River runs through the area from north to south, shaping the local geography.

The city was established in 1959 following Japan's post-war administrative reforms and municipal reorganization. This founding marked an important transition in how local government was structured across the country.

The area held spiritual importance in ancient times, with the former Tosa Kokubun-ji temple serving as a gathering place for religious practice. Today, visitors can sense how this location shaped the religious identity of the historical Tosa Province.

The city offers schools at various levels, including elementary and middle schools as well as public high schools for residents. Visitors will find that local services and amenities are distributed across the urban area.

The Tosa Diary, a notable work of classical Japanese literature, was written by Ki no Tsurayuki while he lived in this region. This literary work remains an important window into the daily life and thoughts of that historical period.
