Akita International University, Public university in Akita, Japan.
Akita International University is a public institution in Akita Prefecture in northern Japan. The grounds hold glass and concrete teaching buildings, student residences, and open outdoor areas that border forests and hills.
The institution opened in 2004 and was designed from the outset for English-language teaching and international links. It grew from the prefecture's wish to offer young people in a region with few opportunities new paths abroad.
The campus draws students from all regions of Japan and dozens of other countries, creating a multilingual learning environment in the rural north. The library and common areas remain in use around the clock, as group work and discussion form part of daily routines.
Most classes take place in English, so visitors should bring basic knowledge if they wish to attend public lectures or guided tours. The campus sits outside the city centre and is best reached by bus or car.
Every student must spend at least one year at a partner institution abroad, which sets the place apart from most Japanese universities. Graduates often leave campus with working knowledge of three or more languages acquired during their studies and time overseas.
