The city served as the final stronghold during the Boshin War, where the Tsuruga Castle stood against imperial forces in the late 1800s.

Visitors can reach major landmarks via the Haikara-san and Akabe buses, which connect the train station to Tsuruga Castle and samurai districts.
Mount Iimori contains a memorial dedicated to the Byakkotai, young samurai who chose death over surrender during the 1868 siege.
