Mitaka, Residential city in western Tokyo, Japan
Mitaka extends across 16.42 square kilometers and contains multiple neighborhoods including Shimo-Renjaku, Jindaiji, and Inokashira, with a population density of 12,000 residents per square kilometer.
The area transformed from a village in Kitatama District of Kanagawa Prefecture in 1889 to an official city of Tokyo Metropolitan area in November 1950.
The Ghibli Museum displays original artwork, exhibits about animation production techniques, and houses educational workshops that illuminate Japanese animation creation processes.
The city connects to central Tokyo through two main railway lines: the JR East Chuo Main Line and the Keio Inokashira Line, making daily commuting efficient.
The Tamagawa Aqueduct canal, constructed in 1653 near the current Mitaka station, remains a testament to early water management systems in the region.
