Higashi-Shikagoe Station, former railway station in Minamifurano, Sorachi district, Hokkaido, Japan
Higashi-Shikagoe Station is a former railway stop in Minamifurano, located on the Nemuro Main Line in rural Hokkaido. The simple structure includes a small platform with shelter and basic station buildings alongside tracks that run through flat farmland.
The station opened in December 1941 as an unstaffed facility serving the local farming community. In 2024, the line was permanently closed, ending more than 80 years of service to the area.
The station was a gathering point for the rural community over many decades. People from nearby farms and forests relied on it to reach work, school, and markets in other towns.
The station sits near a rural road and is easy to reach on foot, though there are no shops or cafes nearby. Bring water and snacks if you plan to spend time exploring the area.
Heavy rainfall in 2016 damaged the rail line near the station, forcing the introduction of bus replacement service. This incident revealed the area's vulnerability to natural events and the challenges of maintaining service in rural Hokkaido.
