Machida Station, Railway interchange station in Machida, Japan.
Machida Station is a railway interchange in Machida, Japan, operated by JR East and Odakyu Electric Railway. The two separate station buildings are linked by a shared concourse that lets travelers switch between lines.
The station opened in 1908 as Haramachida and initially served only the JR East line. The Odakyu line was added in 1927, turning the site into a key transfer point between Tokyo and the western suburbs.
The original name Haramachida was shortened to its current form in 1976 as the complex grew into a major hub. The attached Odakyu Department Store attracts commuters and locals who shop, eat, or wait for their trains here daily.
The platforms of the two operators are roughly 300 meters apart, connected by covered walkways with signage. Travelers planning to transfer should allow a few minutes for the walk, especially during rush hours when crowds are heavy.
In 1980, the Odakyu station was relocated closer to the JR station, cutting the walking distance for transfers from 700 to just 300 meters. This redesign made switching between the two lines much more convenient and faster for thousands of commuters.
