Kumano, Coastal city in southern Mie Prefecture, Japan

Located near the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, Kumano encompasses 373 square kilometers of mountains, forests, and Pacific Ocean coastline.

The area developed from the Kii-Shingū Domain during the Edo period, with the modern city established in November 1954 through the merger of Kinomoto and surrounding villages.

The Hananoiwaya-jinja Shrine, featuring a 45-meter sacred rock, maintains a traditional rope renewal ceremony each February and October.

Travelers reach Kumano through the JR Kisei Main Line, with regular train services connecting to major stations including Nagoya and stations throughout Mie Prefecture.

Shichiri Mihama Beach stretches for 22 kilometers along the Pacific coast, establishing itself as the longest sand and gravel beach in Japan.
