Senshu University, Private university in Chiyoda, Japan
Senshu University operates from two sites in Tokyo, with main facilities located in the Kanda district and a second campus in Ikuta. The grounds include lecture halls, administrative buildings, sports facilities, and several research centers spread across different academic areas.
Four Japanese educators founded Senshu College in 1880 as the first institution to teach specialized subjects in Japanese through local instructors. After the severe Kanto earthquake in 1923, students and faculty worked side by side to reconstruct the destroyed buildings.
The university name comes from the Japanese term for specialized study, reflecting the original commitment to teaching professional subjects in the Japanese language. Today, students move between modern library buildings and lecture halls, bringing energy to the streets around the Kanda district.
The grounds are best explored on foot, as the buildings spread across several blocks and public signage helps with orientation. Most areas remain accessible during class hours, though some entrances may close outside these times.
The institution runs twelve research institutes covering topics from economic history to regional development issues. These institutes offer regular public lectures and seminars that are open to visitors as well.
