Achi, Mountain village in Shimoina district, Japan
Achi is a mountain village in Shimoina district in southwestern Nagano Prefecture, situated near Mount Ena. The terrain is mountainous with a small local population and traditional settlements.
The current administrative boundaries took shape in 1956 through the merger of four previous municipalities. This consolidation established the structure that exists today.
Residents grow crops using methods passed down through generations, cultivating Jerusalem artichoke, garlic, and Yacón in the fields. These farming practices shape the rhythm of daily life here.
The village is accessible by expressway and national routes, with bus service from nearby stations. Plan your route in advance since the area is mountainous and services are limited.
The area earned designation as Japan's top stargazing location in 2006 from the Ministry of Environment. High elevation and low light pollution make the night sky exceptionally clear here.
