Tama Art University, Art university in Hachioji, Tokyo, Japan
Tama Art University is an art academy in Hachioji, western Tokyo, focused on fine arts and design disciplines. The campus includes dedicated studios for painting, sculpture, printmaking, and product design, along with a library holding international art publications.
The institution began in 1935 as a private art school and later became a full university after the war. The second campus in Hachioji opened in the early seventies to provide more space for hands-on work.
The Faculty of Art and Design offers eight departments, including Japanese Painting, Oil Painting, Sculpture, and Environmental Design, reflecting Japanese artistic traditions.
Visitors can see the publicly accessible exhibition spaces and workshop areas by appointment when classes are not in session. The best way to reach the campus is by commuter train, as it sits outside the city center.
The institution takes its name from the Tama River, which flows through the western outskirts of Tokyo. Many alumni later open their own design studios or art spaces in the capital, shaping the contemporary art scene across Japan.
