Kitasaku district, Administrative district in Nagano Prefecture, Japan
Kitasaku district is an administrative region in Nagano Prefecture comprised of three main towns: Karuizawa, Miyota, and Tateshina. These communities sit on elevated terrain in a mountainous area that shapes both the landscape and the way people live there.
The district was established in 1879 as an administrative area in Nagano. Municipal mergers in the early 2000s combined several smaller communities into the three towns that now make up the region.
The three towns host local festivals throughout the year that draw both residents and visitors. Temples and shrines scattered across the mountainous terrain serve as gathering places and reflect the spiritual traditions of the communities.
The district is accessible by the Nagano Shinkansen line, which stops at Karuizawa station and connects to surrounding areas. The elevated terrain and changing seasons mean you should plan your visit based on the activities you want to do, as winter and summer offer very different experiences.
The region transforms dramatically with the seasons, shifting from snow-covered ski slopes in winter to mountain trails perfect for hiking in summer. This means the landscape and available activities change so completely that visiting in different seasons feels like experiencing two entirely different places.
