Tarui, Town in western Gifu Prefecture, Japan

Tarui is a town in western Gifu Prefecture located at the edge of the Nobi Plain, spanning 57 square kilometers. The landscape features traditional neighborhoods alongside agricultural areas, with residential districts and local infrastructure typical of a regional Japanese town.

During the Edo period, Tarui functioned as a way station along the Nakasendo highway, serving travelers crossing between Kyoto and Edo. The town supported numerous inns to accommodate the constant flow of merchants and officials using this important trade route.

The Nangu Shrine serves as the principal sanctuary of the region, dedicated to Kanayamahiko no Mikoto and marked by a substantial torii gate. Visitors can experience the spiritual atmosphere and observe traditional worship practices at this important local site.

Tarui Station provides rail connections on the Tokaido Main Line, linking directly to surrounding regional towns. The nearest Shinkansen access is at Maibara Station, which offers connections to major cities further afield.

Tarui no Izumi is a natural spring documented in poetry since the 11th century, and visitors can still taste its waters today. This ancient source reflects the deep connection between the land and the community's cultural heritage.
