Katsuragi, Mountain town in Ito District, Japan.
Katsuragi is a town in Wakayama Prefecture nestled in a basin formed between the Kii Mountains and Izumi Mountains. The Kinokawa River runs through the valley, shaping the character of the landscape.
The area was formed through the merger of three towns in 1958 and expanded with the integration of another village in 2005. These consolidations shaped the town as it exists today.
The Niutsuhime Shrine, recognized as both a National Historic Site and World Heritage Site, represents the religious heritage of Katsuragi's mountain setting.
The town is surrounded by mountainous terrain and travel between different areas requires time and patience. Plan for longer journeys, as distances can feel greater due to the hilly landscape.
The region features three distinct waterways: the Kinokawa River in the north, the Kishi River in the south, and the Arita River through the former Hanazono area.
