Kaita, Coastal town in Aki District, Japan
Kaita is a coastal town in Aki District that extends from the Seno River mouth across flat terrain to mountainous regions. Elevations gradually rise from sea level to heights between 500 and 600 meters inland.
The name Kaita originated during the Heian period, referring to an imperial manor estate called Kaita-so. This estate remained active until the Nanboku-cho period, shaping the town's early history.
The former Chiba residence displays traditional tatami rooms and stands as a protected cultural asset dating to the 18th century. It sits along the historic Sanyo Road, which once connected major routes through the region.
The town is easily accessible from coastal flatlands, while inland hilly areas can be explored on foot. Visitors should prepare for varied terrain and bring appropriate footwear.
The Himawari Kannon temple houses a 13-meter tall golden statue of Bodhisattva. The temple functions as a significant stop on a regional pilgrimage circuit in Hiroshima.
