Sanriku Fukko National Park, National park along Pacific coast in Tohoku, Japan
Sanriku Fukko National Park covers a section of rugged Pacific coastline in northern Japan, with steep cliffs in the north and intricate bays in the south. The landscape shifts between rocky headlands and small coves that hold beaches and fishing villages.
This park was created in 2013 as part of recovery efforts following the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. The designation reflected a commitment to restoring and protecting the coastal region after significant damage.
Fishing communities dotted along this coast have shaped daily life for generations, and you can see their traditions in the boats, harbors, and seafood that define the region today.
You can enter the park from multiple coastal towns such as Hachinohe, Kuji, and Ishinomaki, each offering different entry points and trail systems. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the rugged terrain.
A long-distance walking trail called the Michinoku Coastal Trail runs through the entire park, connecting multiple prefectures across about 600 kilometers. The route takes you along some of the wildest and least developed coastline sections in Japan.
