Ibaraki University, National university in Mito, Japan
Ibaraki University is an educational institution in Mito within Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan, focusing on humanities, natural sciences and agricultural studies. Its buildings are distributed across three locations: the main campus is in Mito, additional facilities are in Hitachi, and agricultural fields extend across Ami.
Its roots go back to 1920, when separate educational institutions opened that later grew together. It took its current form in 1949, when Mito High School and Ibaraki Normal School were united within a shared framework.
The institution works closely with research partners from other countries, which becomes visible on the grounds through international students and joint seminars. In the laboratories and lecture halls, Japanese and foreign participants meet daily, working on similar topics and exchanging ideas in English or Japanese.
Visitors can explore the facilities during term times, when students and teaching staff are active on the grounds. The different locations are best reached by public transport or bicycle, as they are spread across the region.
The Gene Research Center opened in 1999 and focuses on studying genetic mechanisms in plants and microorganisms. The region itself provides access to specialized facilities for quantum beam research, which is possible in only a few places in Japan.
