Yokota Air Base, Military air base in Tama Area, Tokyo, Japan
Yokota Air Base sits west of central Tokyo and crosses several municipalities in the Tama region, where transport aircraft land and take off. Its runways and hangars together form one of the larger American air force installations in East Asia.
The Imperial Japanese forces established the airfield in 1940 to station fighter aircraft during the Pacific conflict. After the surrender, the United States took control of the facility in fall 1945 and developed it into a permanent installation.
The annual Friendship Festival brings together Japanese citizens and military personnel through aircraft displays, base tours, and food events.
The installation is only open to civilian visitors during special events that require advance registration. Those in the surrounding area can occasionally see military aircraft flying low over the western suburbs.
Two separate air force commands from different nations share the same location and use common infrastructure here. This dual structure is rare in the region and shapes daily operations.
