Makomanai Ice Arena, Ice rink and music venue in Minami-ku, Japan.
Makomanai Ice Arena is an indoor sports complex in Minami-ku, Sapporo, with a central ice surface and fixed seating areas on multiple levels. The facility combines a competition space with side rooms for training, changing areas, and technical equipment under one continuous roof.
The complex was built in 1972 and hosted figure skating competitions during the Sapporo Winter Olympics. After the games, the building remained in use for sporting events and concerts alike.
The name comes from an Ainu word for birch forest, and birch trees still grow around the site today. Families from Sapporo visit for skating sessions when winter season begins and the ice surface opens for public use.
The ice rink sits in the northern part of Makomanai Park, accessible by the Namboku subway line. After leaving the station at Makomanai, a walking path through wooded grounds leads to the entrance.
When concerts take place, the ice surface is covered with panels so musicians and audiences stand on solid ground. The building's acoustics were originally designed for sporting events and give performances a distinct sound quality.
