Iruma Air Base, Military airbase in Sayama, Japan.
Iruma Air Base is a military installation in Sayama and Iruma within Saitama Prefecture, equipped with several hangars, active runways, and aircraft maintenance workshops. The facility sits at around 90 meters elevation and covers a wide area where both light and heavy aircraft operate daily.
The installation began in 1937 as Irumagawa Airfield, initially serving as a training site for the Imperial Army air force. After the Second World War, the US Air Force took control before eventually transferring it to the Japan Self-Defense Forces.
On November 3rd each year, a public air show lets visitors watch fighters up close and see the Blue Impulse team fly formations overhead. Families from across the region come for the displays and demonstrations, making it a popular local tradition.
The site lies near several train stations, making it accessible for visitors during the annual event. Those coming for the air show should arrive early, as the grounds draw large crowds on that day.
The central air defense headquarters here coordinates several squadrons, including rescue helicopters and specialist units flying Kawasaki T-4 trainers. Regular exercises take place on the grounds, with pilots training for search and rescue missions.
