Ōfuna

Ōfuna is a district in Kamakura with mixed residential and commercial zones defined by a large white statue. The area combines everyday streets with trains passing through the central station.

During World War II, a prisoner of war camp operated here where Allied servicemen endured harsh conditions. After the war, the white statue was built as a memorial to peace.

The Ōfuna Kannon temple displays Buddhist architecture with a white statue created after World War II to represent peace. Visitors experience a quiet atmosphere here that contrasts sharply with the busy station area.

The station connects four train lines and the Shonan Monorail, enabling travel to Tokyo, Yokohama, and coastal regions. Visit outside rush hours when stations are less crowded.

The name Ōfuna comes from Japanese characters meaning 'large ship,' reflecting its ancient role as a transport hub. This etymological link to maritime history remains visible today through its function as a railroad junction.
