Shimonoseki Station, Railway station in Shimonoseki, Japan
Shimonoseki Station is a railway station in Shimonoseki, Japan, serving both regional and long-distance trains. The three island platforms sit on an elevated level and connect to the mezzanine through stairs and escalators, where ticket counters and waiting areas are located.
The first station opened in 1901 under the name Bakan Station on the Sanyo Railway, about 700 meters east of the present site. In 1942 it moved to its current location and took the name Shimonoseki.
The station looks modern today, with open waiting areas and platforms where travelers move between trains or use it as a starting point for nearby landmarks and international ferries to South Korea and China. The name "Shimonoseki" refers to the strait city where people have long relied on the connection between the main island Honshu and Kyushu.
The Midori no Madoguchi ticket counters help travelers daily with reservations and general questions. The platforms are easy to reach by stairs and escalators, and signage throughout the station guides you to the departure points.
A fire in January 2006 completely destroyed the main station building, triggered by an incident involving a 74-year-old resident. The reconstruction resulted in the current appearance of the facility.
