Altyn Arashan, Alpine valley with thermal springs near Karakol, Kyrgyzstan.
Altyn Arashan is an alpine valley with thermal springs situated at roughly 2500 meters elevation near Karakol. Three groups of sulfurous warm springs flow beside the Arashan River through a narrow gorge.
The valley developed from a simple mountain passage into a recognized thermal resort destination, drawing visitors from across Central Asia over generations. Wooden structures were built to make the springs more accessible and usable.
The name combines the Kyrgyz word 'Altyn' meaning golden with Sanskrit 'Arashan' for healing springs, reflecting the region's mixed cultural roots. Visitors still use the warm waters in traditional ways that locals have practiced for generations.
Visitors reach the valley through a four-hour hike from Ak Suu or by rough mountain roads with vehicles, and horseback treks are also available. The best time to visit is during warmer months when the trails are easier to navigate.
The valley sits within a nature reserve where snow leopards and bears roam freely in their natural habitat. This wildlife presence makes every visit an unexpected encounter with mountain wilderness.
