Kumtor Gold Mine, Gold Mine in Kyrgyzstan
The Kumtor Gold Mine is a large open-pit mining operation in the Issyk-Kul Region of Kyrgyzstan where gold is extracted from the ground. The facility spans a wide area with deep excavations, heavy machinery working continuously, and a network of roads for transporting extracted material.
The gold deposit was discovered in 1978 by Soviet scientists, but development only began after Kyrgyzstan's independence when a partnership with Canadian companies started in 1992. Mining operations launched in 1997 and has since become a major revenue source for the country.
