The province was created in 1896 when the original Pyongan Province split into northern and southern sections. It maintained its administrative status throughout the Japanese occupation period until 1945.

The province has railway connections and a trolleybus network linking various urban areas, making travel between populated centers possible. Most transport infrastructure concentrates around the larger cities, while smaller settlements have less connectivity.
The largest manufacturing facility in the province located in Pyongsong focuses on vehicle production and has been a major industrial operation for decades. This factory significantly shapes the economic orientation of the provincial capital.
