Japanese Torreya of Samin-ri, Natural Monument tree in Samin-ri, South Korea

The Japanese Torreya stands 11.5 meters tall with a circumference of 5.8 meters, splitting into four branches at 1.5 meters from ground level.

During King Taejong's reign in 1417, this tree survived a mass harvest as it was considered too small for military construction purposes.

Local residents perform annual ceremonies on January 15th, circling the tree while offering prayers for the protection of their community.

Stone retaining walls reinforce the base of the tree, though the root space has decreased considerably through the passing decades.

The tree produces seeds that were traditionally used as medicine to treat parasitic infections among the local population of Samin-ri.
