Lake Soyang, reservoir in South Korea
Lake Soyang is a large artificial reservoir in Gangwon State created by damming the Han River. The water spreads across more than sixteen hundred hectares and is surrounded by gentle hills covered with forests and fields.
The reservoir was created in the 1970s by damming the Han River. Since then it has served as a critical source of drinking water and flood control for nearby cities.
Water levels fluctuate depending on rainfall and usage, which affects conditions during your visit. Be aware that seasonal changes occur and algae blooms are more common in warmer months.
Scientists regularly monitor the water for plankton communities that shift dramatically with the seasons. During hot summer months, cyanobacteria can take over and turn the water green while producing unpleasant odors.
