Gangwon Wonju Innovation City, Innovation urban development in Wonju, South Korea.
Gangwon Wonju Innovation City is a planned development in the Wonju area of Gangwon Province, South Korea, bringing together government agencies, research centers, and housing within a single district. The layout is organized into distinct zones, each serving a different function, connected by wide roads and public spaces.
The development was built as part of a national program that relocated government offices and public agencies out of Seoul to other parts of the country. Construction began in the 2000s, following a decision to create several innovation cities across South Korea to support regional growth.
The city draws researchers, civil servants, and students who give the streets a working-week rhythm rather than a leisure feel. Walking through the area, visitors notice clusters of institutes and office blocks that define daily life here more than shops or restaurants.
Wonju is well connected to Seoul by train and highway, making the journey straightforward for day visitors or business travelers. Within the district, having a car or using taxis is helpful since the different zones are spread over a large area and are not always easy to walk between.
Gangwon Wonju was among the last of South Korea's innovation cities to finish construction, which means much of the infrastructure is newer than in comparable districts elsewhere in the country. This gives the area a notably uniform look, built in a single era rather than layer by layer over time.
