Karkaraly National Park, National park in Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan
Karkaraly National Park is a protected area of republican significance in the Karkaraly District of Karaganda Region, Kazakhstan. It covers the Karkaraly Range, where pine forests grow among rocky formations and several mountain lakes sit at different elevations, with the highest peaks reaching around 1,400 meters (4,600 ft).
The area was first set aside as a forest reserve in 1884 and later became a national park in 1998. Inside the park, archaeological sites show that people lived here from the Stone Age through the Iron Age.
The park's Nature Museum shows native wildlife through exhibits and keeps a preserve with bison and red deer that visitors can observe up close. This gives a clear picture of what animals naturally live in this part of Kazakhstan.
The park has marked trails for hiking and areas for cross-country skiing in winter, with the most accessible conditions running from spring through fall. Sturdy footwear is a good idea since the terrain mixes rocky ridges with forested paths.
Lake Shaitankol holds a steady water level even though no visible streams or springs feed into it. Scientists have not yet been able to fully explain its depth or the makeup of its water.
