Abay, town in Kazakhstan
Abay is a city in Abay Qalasy, Kazakhstan, and serves as the administrative center of the district. It features simple architecture, wide streets, and flat landscapes with scattered hills typical of central Kazakh steppe terrain.
The city was founded in 1949 as a coal mining settlement under the name Sherubay-Noora. It officially became a city in 1961 and was renamed to honor the poet Abai Kunanbayev.
The city is named after the famous Kazakh poet Abai Kunanbayev, whose work shapes local culture. His poems and ideas are part of Kazakh education and leave a quiet but strong influence in the community.
The city is accessible by road from nearby places like Qaraghandy, best reached by car or bus since no large airports are nearby. Within the city, you can walk easily or use local taxis, as roads are straightforward and traffic is light.
In 2014, a bandy team from the city competed in national championships, showing how ice-hockey-like sports matter for local youth. This involvement demonstrates how small cities build community strength through sports and youth engagement.
