Stepnogorsk

Stepnogorsk is a city in Akmola Region, Kazakhstan, spread across dry grassland north of Astana. Wide streets run through housing blocks, small parks and administrative buildings that still show the functional architecture of Soviet times.

The settlement started in 1959 as a closed military zone under the code name Tselinograd-25 and served the development of chemical and biological agents. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, it opened to the public in 1992 and renamed itself after the surrounding steppe.

The name means steppe city and mirrors the endless plain surrounding the settlement, which still shapes the urban layout today. Many residents gather after work in small shops and tea houses, where Kazakh hospitality blends with Russian habits from the Soviet era.

Walking or outdoor tours are comfortable in summer, while winter months require plenty of clothing against cold wind. Most services sit in the center, and you can reach everywhere on foot or by local buses.

A decommissioned research center west of the city limits was once part of an international agreement to dismantle biological weapons programs. Visitors can see the outer structures from a distance, but the facility itself remains closed and monitored by authorities.
