Zharkent is an administrative city located near the Chinese border in southeastern Kazakhstan. It spreads along the Usek River with a mix of modern buildings and traditional residential neighborhoods.
The city was founded in 1882 and was named Panfilov from 1942 to 1991 in honor of General Ivan Panfilov from World War II. This earlier name continues to shape how locals view their city's past.
