Khammouane Province

Khammouane is a province in central Laos characterized by mountainous terrain and three major rivers that flow toward the Mekong. The landscape features steep hillsides, green valleys, and a capital city called Thakhek that sits along the river.

The region was part of the Sikhottabong Kingdom in the 6th century and later developed under French colonial influence. Thakhek still displays numerous buildings from this colonial era that shape the appearance of the streets today.

The province is home to Phouthai, Bru, and Khmu communities, each maintaining distinct ways of life visible in local architecture, dress, and markets.
