The cathedral features a cruciform layout with a central dome, expanded facades, and a bell tower positioned at its eastern section.
Built in 1772 following multiple reconstructions, the cathedral stands on the site of earlier religious structures dating back to the 5th century AD.
The cathedral serves as the main seat of the Greek Orthodox Metropolitan bishop and represents the largest Greek Orthodox congregation in Beirut.
Visitors can access the underground archaeological museum displaying ancient artifacts, including oil lamps, pottery, and portions of previous church altars.
Excavations beneath the cathedral revealed 25 burial sites, including a skeleton wearing a bronze tiara and containing an iron arrowhead.
