Sursock Museum, Art museum in Rmeil district, Beirut, Lebanon.
The Sursock Museum is an art museum housed in a Renaissance Revival villa with white stone facades, ornate balconies, and stained glass windows. The building spans multiple above-ground levels filled with paintings, sculptures, and prints from various periods and styles.
A wealthy merchant had this villa built in the early 1900s and left it to the public as a museum. The building has been restored multiple times following war damage and other disruptions to maintain its original splendor.
The museum carries the name of its founder, a wealthy art collector from the 19th century, and reflects his personal taste in art. The collection shows how local artists throughout the decades wove together modern and traditional approaches.
Visitors can explore multiple underground levels that house exhibition spaces, a research library, and an auditorium. Access is well-organized throughout the building, with clear signage to help you navigate the different areas.
After the severe port explosion in 2020, the building was damaged, but international support helped with extensive repairs. Many visitors don't realize the museum only reopened in 2023 following this restoration work.
