Hanine is a mountain village in Bint Jbeil District in southern Lebanon, situated on a rocky ridge at about 670 meters elevation. The settlement is surrounded by vineyards and farmland and served historically as a center for olive and wine production.
The area shows signs of ancient settlement through old cisterns, tombs with chamber burials, sarcophagi, and water storage basins found near the village. These remains suggest the region has been inhabited and farmed continuously since ancient times.
The village name comes from Semitic-Arabic roots meaning 'mercy', which reflects the linguistic heritage of the region's inhabitants. This heritage shapes how local people and visitors today think about and speak of the place.
The main route to the village runs through a mountain road from Bint Jbeil, though it can be challenging to navigate during winter months. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and arrive early in the day to explore the rocky terrain safely.
At the heart of the village stands an enormous ancient cistern with distinctive round arches at its entrance, the only surviving historical stone structure. This cistern reveals the builders' skill in storing water in this mountainous, dry region.
