Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Protected rainforest in Southern Province, Sri Lanka

The reserve spans 11,000 hectares of primary tropical rainforest across Sabaragamuwa and Southern Province, containing steep hills, valleys, and diverse microhabitats.

The forest formation dates back to the Jurassic period, encompassing 36,000 hectares of land that remained protected due to its remote geographical location.

Local communities collect herbal medicine and non-timber products from the forest, which they consider sacred and integral to their traditional practices.

Visitors require professional guides for exploration, with hiking options ranging from three to nine hours through designated entrances at Weddagala, Rakwana, Neluwa, and Deniyaya-Mederipitiya.

The reserve houses over 60 percent of endemic trees and serves as habitat for 50 percent of Sri Lankan endemic species, including birds, amphibians, and butterflies.
